why would pupae be under carpet?

Carpet Floors - the soft and comfortable side of living.

It statred when I woke up one morning to 20 or so flies(blue bottles I think) around my 1st floor flat! they were abit slow and almost in a daze like state! I got rid of all the flies and went hunting for the sorce!? I cant think where they would be coming from as my flat is clean &in pretty sure iv no dead things around! I then lifted the carpet to find 20 or so pupae some hatched &some still complete with fly inside!! how on earth could this happen!! this is such a head scratcher! please give me any info you can?
The pupae was too far apart to have been from something being spilt! they were not in clusters they were scattered here there all along by skirting board under carpet & not just in one room either, that was in the hallway the other pupae & flies were in the bathroom, I was worried it maybe a sewage leak but there is no smell what so ever! This is why its hard to know whats happened! They seem to have died out now but was really odd! Only other thing I can think of is my cats brought something in which crawled somewhere deep &died!(no smell tho!) every year for last 3yrs iv had wasps come & nest so maybe they have occupied there old space! yuk.... I hate going in the loft!!
