We got our dog from a friend recently, shes about 10 month old and is a rottweiler/doberman cross and she is lovely, really well mannered, gets on great with people and other dogs, doesn't chew, she's not all perfect though...
We brought her home and on the first day she pooped in our bedroom so I showed her (not rubbing her nose, just pointed) and told her she was a bad girl and put her outside (she put her head down immediately as she knew what she had done wrong).
The problem is that if we leave her on her own in the house for whatever reason (i.e. popping to the shops) even if it is for 10 mins, she is guaranteed to have pooped in the house, she usually finds a place with carpet too never on the easy to clean laminate or on the paper I left down just in case! I tell her off and put her outside while I clean it up. I always let her outside to do her business for as long as I can, I leave the back door open all morning whilst I get ready for work so she has plenty of time to go too.
I decided to use a crate as apparently dogs won't mess their own bed, and it has worked wonders all week and then today we had run out of dog food so I let her outside for 25 mins then put her in her crate whilst I popped to the shop for some food I was gone for 15 mins and when I came back she was covered, her bed was covered and so was the crate!
It seems as though she is pooping out of protest of being left on her own! How can I teach her that what she is doing is wrong and to use the time I give her outside to do her business?
Is it just a phase?? How do I stop this??
1. Where did you get the idea we watch her poop?
2. she has a couple of toys in the crate with her, we walk her in the morning as soon as we get up, when we get home from work and then just before we go to bed, so in total she gets around 2 hours walking a day at the moment but when the nights/days get lighter we can take her down to the fields and she can play for longer on those.
just a quick update, we took her out as usual before we went to bed and then let her out in the yard too (she's won't go when she's on her walk for some reason) then we put her in her crate with fresh bedding, woke up this morning, exactly the same! so i've decided not to use the crate anymore as i'd rather just clean it up from the floor instead of having to remove the bedding, wipe and disinfect the crate, and clean my poopy dog too - it's just so frustrating as she's been really good in the crate up until now! :-(
