I'm not sure how much help this will bring but, I recently started thinking of a movie that I saw when I was little, I think the era is similar to the secret garden, there were no cars, and it was about a young girl, she lived with her parents and if I remember correctly her parents had a big dinner at the house and somone poisoned the wine and the girl found her parents laying in bed dying and the mom had her wine glass on the floor and the wine was on the carpet. The girl then was taken away by soldiers I think and she had this doll that was left behind and for some reason I think she called it Lydia and I think one of the soldiers grabbed it and gave it to her at some point later. She did go to live with someone after her parents died but I dont remember if this person has any relation to her or just decided to keep her. If anyone knows this movie please let me know. I'ts been driving me crazy thinking of what this movie could be!
