Vauxhall Corsa Losing Coolant?

Carpet Floors - the soft and comfortable side of living.

Please can someone help? Corsa 1.2 Design 5 door hatchback. Mileage 32,000 from new. I think the engine is a Z12XEP. Recently the EML light came on so I changed the spark plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter and pollen filter. The light would still not go off so I did the flash test and changed the Crank sensor. The light has now gone and the engine is running smoothly again. However I am getting coolant loss - it goes down from the normal level to the bottom of the bottle every two weeks and I have to top it up. The coolant level was very low prior to my servicing the car and I suspect that it was a fault from a few weeks / months before - that neither of us had noticed until the EML light came on.

The first mechanic said it was the water pump and it needed changing - cost £150 all in. Then took it to a garage for a second opinion and they reckon it is a Head Gasket problem and have quoted me £400 to change it and get the cylinder head skimmed because they reckon its probably warped.

Here are the symptoms right now:

1. Wife uses the Corsa for short journeys only as she works locally - 4 miles return.
2. Mayonnaise type of gunk on the oil filler cap every time I open it, even though I have cleaned it each time.
3. No white or mayonnaise gunk on the dipstick.
4. No loss of power, the car is running smoothly and picks up fine.
5. No overheating problem, the temp goes to 87 degrees Centigrade and stays there steadily.
6. Can't see any traces of water in the exhaust pipe.
7. No traces of oil in the coolant bottle.
8. Ran it for 4 miles and then slowly opened the coolant bottle to release pressure, only a slight hiss - the water is NOT bubbling.
9. Checked the oil in the dipstick several times with my fingers and can't see any water in it.
10. Oil level on the dipstick has not risen or dropped since I changed the oil.
11. There is a steady drip of water on the passenger footwell, not sure if its related to the coolant loss - feeling behind the glove compartment there seems to be some sort of square plastic bit behind it and that is soaking wet. The carpet is soaked underneath this. Not sure if its coolant or just rain water leaking into the passenger footwell.
12. The internal fan heater is working fine and gets quite hot when its switched on.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
