Hi Peeps thanks so much for reading!
I recently bought some glue-less laminate flooring for my living room, which is currently carpeted over a wood topped floor, which is nice and level.
We're working on a super tight budget, so are planning to lay the new flooring over the existing underlay.. I know it's not recommended generally, BUT:
1- it's rented accommodation- we'll have moved out in the next 5 years, I'd think, so it hasn't got to last forever. (Yes, we're allowed to do whatever we want to the place)
2- the current foam (not rubber!) underlay has been there pretty much since the house was built- i've checked and it's clean, dry, and not perished, but because of its age, it's flat as a pancake.
So, the problems you'd normally get with carpet underlay being too bouncy/ causing too much movement in the laminate, i don't think are relevant because its just got zero bounce left in it at all, and seeing as its only got to last a few years anyway...
I'm decorating the rented place because it's done to a really low standard like most cheap rental places, but dammit it's my home, so i would prefer to live somewhere nice while i'm there.
I didn't think laying directly onto the floor was an option? It's downstairs, obviously, so i suppose noise wouldn't be an issue... would it be an idea to remove the underlay and perhaps just line the floor with newspaper, so it's got something to hold on to?
