My kids aged 12, 14 and 16 were eating all the snacks without my permission before I got home from work, so I had a lock and key put on my bedroom door and hid them in there under my bed. This seemed to work well.
Then, one day during half term when the kids were home alone for the week while I was at work, I got a call from my youngest saying that he turned the bath on 'as a joke' and it had overflowed and caused the power to go off... also ruined 3 of the carpets which I had to claim on the insurance! My oldest aged 16 had got an electric shock from the light switch and then she took the younger two out of the house to use the library computers until I arrived home rather than being helpful and ripping up the carpets! I put a lock and key on the bathroom door so nobody can shower without my permission and me being there to supervise.
Recently, I noticed that the kids were leaving the lights on when I go to bed -- so I worked out that I can turn off the strip switch for the light circuit in the office and then have a lock and key put on the office so the kids can't turn the lights on when I've gone to bed at about 10.30. (they like to stay up until midnight or later). The problem is that the younger boys are urinating all over the bathroom walls and toilet seat as it is too dark to see (or so they claim!). My daughter argues with me, saying that it's my fault and I should clean the bathroom! It's not my fault. I wouldn't have to do it if they just turned the lights off.
Does anyone think I am going too far with this, or would you do the same in my situation?
