The Ballad of Henry Moore
Henry Moore was running, running for his life
Another man was after him carrying a knife.
Henry was not a young man but he was very nimble,
But the other man was quicker and catching him was simple.
Henry dodged through the crowd to make good his escape
He darted through a doorway just before it was too late.
He skipped along a wooden floor and down some concrete steps
He was looking for another door, or signs of any exits.
He bounded onto a side street but didn?t stop running
The thought of no more ?Moore?, was what kept his energy coming.
He looked for a place to rest, a hurried and panicked search
He saw a place of Sanctuary; a little Holy Church.
He entered intent on giving thanks to those who were within
Especially for that gift God gave of adrenalin.
But the pursuer was no respecter of The Holy Lord
And the carpet was where Henry?s life was finally absorbed.
That anger always ends in strife is not to be suppressed
If you pursue another?s wife; you?re not likely to be blessed.
Yet of that day there?s more to tell; not least about the killer.
Of whose actions we are now sadly too familiar.
Eyes in tears he fell to his knees over the evil done
But the Devil danced and clapped his hands; for him this was fun.
Of course he had his day in court explaining what befell
But it didn?t stop him spending time in a lonely prison cell.
For many years he suffered in solitary silence
Every day tormented by an act of deadly violence.
There with time to sit and think his mind became a blank
The Devil waited patiently, for this one was ?in the Bank?.
The killer?s just a memory and his name is not recalled
His life ended surrounded by four bleak prison walls.
From there he has descended to a cold piece of ground
And no one ever visits, there?s no headstone to be found.
Henry?s got a better deal; he?s received the Lord?s mercy
But don?t be fooled into thinking that he?s got it easy.
We know for sure he was playing with one out of seven
And truly I can tell you he didn?t get into Heaven.
For although Henry cried aloud on that day he died
The Lord was not fooled about all the ways he?d lied.
True; it?s never too late to take time out to repent
But it is rather foolish to wait until life is nearly spent.
To die one step towards Heaven is a better place to dwell
Rather than be successful in running all the way to Hell.
So if you?re ever tempted, even if the Lady insists
You might do well to recall why it?s better to resist.
As poor Henry can tell you, even though he is no more
It isn?t any fun to look at your blood upon the floor.
So let the Lord know early for all your sorry sakes
And don?t let a Ballad be the record of your mistakes.
