I have a 3 month old puppy. She's amazing and obeys everything I teach...except she chews up a couple of spots on the carpet. Obviously this is already bad enough, but to add to it, I live in an apartment, so it's not like it's MY carpet. When I'm home, I can just watch her and stop her when she goes for it, but when I leave, she goes back to it. I've used all kinds of things trying to deter her - she likes all of the bitter sprays, black pepper, crushed red pepper, and ginger.
What are some fabric-safe (non-staining, non-bleaching) options that won't harm my dog? White vinegar maybe? Any serious suggestions are appreciated!!
Extra info:
She can't roam free - she is confined to a single room at all times. Unfortunately, every room has carpet. There isn't a way to avoid it. I crate her at night. Her crate is small because we're using it for house breaking purposes, so it's not used during the day. She hasn't had a single accident for almost a month now. I have a 1 year old dog also. They absolutely love each other, and have since the second I first set the puppy down on the floor. The 1 year old never had an interest in chewing on anything until she saw the new one chewing up the carpet - now she goes to the same spots and licks the carpet...she doesn't destroy anything, but it seems to encourage the puppy to tear it up more.
I already said there isn't a way to avoid the carpet. It's in every room that I can block off - including the bathroom (whoever designed these apartments are retarded).
I can't take her on walks or to any classes because she hasn't had all of her shots yet. She's under 3 lbs and I make sure she gets tons of exercise inside daily. She has plenty of toys to play with and I do train her some every day. I can't afford to buy a crate that is large enough to leave her in for hours at a time during the day. The crate I have is only big enough for her to stand up and turn around. I also don't have anyone I can leave her with during the day - everyone else works, just like me.
She would just chew up the throw rug instead of the carpet. I don't just want to protect my carpet - I want to train her not to chew.
Does no one know of bad tasting things I can put on the carpet?
