It was 1996; I was a 4 year old little girl. My twin sister and I were playing as we usually do when were together. I remember we were wearing these pretty little dresses and playing with our Barbie?s. Our parents were both at work and our brother?s had been watching us. Not really they were too busy playing video games to notice us. I was playing in one of my brothers rooms when I found a lighter. My sister and I played with it until we figured out what it did.
`Well to be honest I was the one who figured it out. I went to my bedroom and walked in my closet to hide and play with it by myself. I then decided it was a smart idea to light my closet full of dresses on fire. I sat there in the closet watching the flames grow I remember watching the flames dance and the different colors each dress gave off as it burned. Then they all started to melt on top of me I was scared by then but i couldn?t move I was frozen with fear. I was sitting in the closet for 30 minutes before my brother came and pulled me out; my father was called and told to put me in a tub of water. He did that but kept me in the house which wasn?t smart because of smoke inhalation. My mother finally came home and grabbed me out of the bath tub and wrapped me in three large blankets and ran out of the house. When the ambulance arrived all I can remember is there being a lot of ice and a paramedic putting a needle in my arm.
I was sent to the nearest hospital for immediate medical attention. After the doctors wrapped me with gauze and cleaned my wounds. My mother had to discharge me from the hospital after the finished because it was too expensive and she wasn?t able to afford it. They referred her to a man who worked for the Shriners Hospital for kids. The next day we went and I was taken care of right away. The Shriners have helped me out in so many ways. If it wasn?t for them I would have scars all over my face and three fingers amputated and almost no hair. With the help from them I have all my fingers and hair and a few barely visible scars. From that day on my mother and I have donated to the shriners.
I will always remember this day because after the fire my mother went into the house and looked at the spot where the fire was started; there was a circle of carpet around the spot where I sat.
She tells me that I had a guardian angel watching out for me. I always look back at this day because it haunts me but at the same time inspires me to live a better life and not to take anything for granted. The lesson I learned from this experience was to never play with a light.
