I gave notice as per lease, cleaned carpets at my own expense (professional cleaners), filled oil tank to more than it was when I moved in, and cleaned up the house. My landlady inspected and approved, took final meter readings (bill has now arrived and been paid). I thought she would give me the cheque for my deposit back right away but she said she would post it to me. Two weeks have passed and it hasn't arrived. I went to see her and explained that with her deposit outstanding plus rent and 2 months' deposit for new flat I was feeling the pinch, but she just laughed and said 'You'll be living on beans on toast for the rest of the month' How long can she legally hold onto my deposit? (Scotland)
