I have a neighbour who is currrently off sick and has been since April. She lives up the road and whenever she sees my car in the drive pops round. I open the door and don't even say anything before she's barged in.
I'm a wheelchair user and have been off work for a while as I had a flair up so I'm at home trying to get strong again but need a lot of rest and sleep. Even talking on the phone is difficult, let alone having someone come to the house.
Her daughter used to walk our dog but I fund out she was only letting him out for a pee in the garden, not doing the half hour we were paying £5 for so we made excuses and stopped that.
She comes round when I'm off sick from work, which has happened a lot, and stays for ages. She never asks how I am but just tells me how awful her life is - everything from the recession to the shoulder injury she has which is why she's off sick. She ever even asks "How are you today". She'll often say she's gasping but never offers to make tea, just assumes I'll make it.
Yesterday the neighbour and her 13 year old daughter came round to ask to use my laptop and printer to type and print out a document to take to her work tribunal. I was a bit annoyed as printer ink is expensive and I don't like other people using my laptop as I have lots of improtant documents like my dissertaion on it. but, I find it hard to say no to people so allowed it. Then I asked if Laura could do me a favour and take an envelope to the post box. Laura pulled a face and said "Do I have to, I've just had PE so I'm sooooo tired." For an able bodied person it is less than a 3 minute round trip. It really is that close. I am a wheelchair user but don't have an electric wheelchair and my upperbody strength is low so I find it takes ages to get there and causes me pain. I ended up doing it on crutches and it took me 25 minutes.
Then this morning I heard a knock at the door and thought, right, I'll pretend I'm not here. So, she knocked again the walked round to my lounge window and rapped. It scared the hell out of me. So I ended up letting her in.
In the past I've taken her to the doctors and then hospital, I've leant her our carpet cleaner, my husband has helped her steam her house when they had a fire. All things I'm happy to do but she's never offered to even make me a cup of tea. I make us both tea and have to carry them in one at a time so I can use my crutches with one hand.
So what can I do? Obviously the ignoring her option hasn't worked. My house is all ground floor so I can't hide upstairs,a nd don't feel I should hide in my own house. I don't know if there's anything I can say as she gets quite touchy and has left me a note in the past saying I've upset her.
Oh help, I'm so tired and everytime my door bell rings I think "I hope it isn't Mary and Laura".
