I adopted a pair of 8 week old kittens a month ago, one is a boy and one is a girl. Both were using the litter box with no problem until the boy became constipated. He would scream when he tried to go to the bathroom and it wouldn't come out or completely out. His bum was swollen from the poop lodged in there. It would come out eventually, on the carpet when I wasn't looking and it would be quite long, like 4 inches. I got them both dewormed , but that didnt help him at all and then I started giving him a bit of olive oil in his food. I also switched to wet kitten food + a bit of dry, though I want to stop with the dry eventually.
After a few days , he stopped being constipated, but he wont go back to using his litter box. I figured he associates pain with the box, so I got 2 more boxes and put them in different places in my apartment , but still he wont use them for his poo. He pees in the boxes , but sometimes he'll pee on the kitchen floor instead. I put his nose in it and told him NO sternly then put him in his litter box, but he just jumps out again. He's kind of a nervous kitty and I dont want to stress him more with this, but it breaks my heart to think that if he can't go back to using his litter box , I wont be able to keep him here in my apartment and will have to get rid of him.
