On Friday I brought home two beautiful bearded dragons (one female called Petree & one Male called Charlie) they are both 2 years old. They live together (yes I know this isn?t advised but that?s how they were!) in a 3 ft wide, 1 ft deep and 1 ft high vivarium with one UV Lamp at one end heating around 90c.
I re-homed them from a lady who had lost interest and I'm here to TRY and make there life?s better but it seems stress from moving home may have affected Petree!? Since the day I brought them home she has stayed in the cooler corner of the vivarium and not moved!
At first she sat there scratching away at the wall for about an hour and then she curled up and fell asleep. I decided not to disturb her as I read some BD?s need time to adjust to new surroundings and acclimatise etc. But it?s now Monday and she still hasn?t moved or eaten a thing!
I know that she is ?ok? (so to speak) as she does open her eyes and look around a lot and she likes me stroking her head.
I just don?t know whether I should try and move her or take her out for a walk around on our carpets, or just leave her to get used to things still and hope she comes around?!
Charlie on the other hand has been the complete opposite, he is very active, baths under the light, happily comes out to play and have a run around, drinks water, eats locusts I feed and some greens).
They seem to be happy together. I mean Charlie goes and curls up next to her at night time and they seem cosy enough.
The lady I got them from said they have never had any problems together and there?s no territorial imbalance. As far as I know Petree has had 2 sets of eggs but they have never been a successful breeding couple.
I have just purchased a new Vivarium for them, its 5 ft long, 2 ft deep and 2 ft high < big enough and I?m hoping it might make them more happy!?
Q1 : What should I do about Petree. Should I move her and try hand feeding her or leave her be and hope she comes round in her own time?
Q2: They currently have sand in the vivarium. I?ve read sand is not that suitable regardless of how nice it looks so I?m NOT going to use sand in their new vivarium. Where can I but some tiles from or repi carpet? Or would a general kitchen flooring lineal be ok?! I?m from the UK mind.
Q3: I don?t mind feeding them live food and the lady who I got them from suggested Lo
custs ? however after trying this I?ve decided I?d rather not make locust a common food for them as they totally freak me out because they jump. What other live food do you recommend that wont jump in my face!!!
Q4: What lighting/heating do you recommend for my new vivarium(UK Products please). I?m hoping it will come by this Wednesday and I?ll have it set up ready for them by Thursday.
I know all of the above is a lot to take in but I really want to help my new BD?s settle in and have a good life. They were neglected from there previous owner and I want things to change so they have at least another 8 healthy years in them!!!
Your best answers, suggestions, tips and help would be greatly appreciated.
THANKS SO MUCH IN ADVANCE, CLAIRE xXx
