An engineer from a big utility company damaged my carpet when he repaired a leaking radiator. The company offered to pay for the carpet replacement. I received a mandate instruction from their insurance company and I used one of their approved stores.
The fitter did not do a professional work and damaged the carpet in the communal hall area and part of the front door frame. When I complained the store refused to do anything about it claiming that it was an insurance job they did as a favour and I had no right. When I complained to the insurance company they finally arranged the repair work. Although the flooring has been corrected, the damages done to the carpet and door frame could not be rectified by the replacement fitter.
The store agreed to pay for the replacement of the carpet and sent an estimator from their local carpet shop. But the amount they offered was no way near the costs at £135, as the area covers about 10 square meter. They said they will not be taking my complaint any further. I complained to the insurance company who authorized and paid for the job, sending them an estimate given by a local carpet store who I used before, at £580 which seems reasonable. The insurance company insisted £135 would be sufficient and refused to give evidence, and kept changing stories whenever I challenged them. Now they refused to have anything with me. I complained to the utility company but they also refused to have anything to do with me.
I am now prepared to take further action but who will be responsible eventually? The utility company, the insurance company or their approved store?
