I recently moved out of a rented property. The landlord is now claiming I owe him £720 damages. The landlord didn?t take a deposit from me when we moved in but is saying he will take court action to recover the costs.
I completely disagree that we have caused the damage he is claiming. He is charging stupid sums of money for things that didn?t need doing. Like £100 for curtains cleaning, £70 for the oven cleaning (which I cleaned myself and know was clean) and he says we need to replace two carpets. I accept that I did damage one hallway carpet but said I?d pay £200 for it but he says it?s unacceptable. The carpet was old and it?s very small so it is absolutely not worth more than £200. I dispute we damaged the bedroom carpet.
Anyway he says he is threatening court actino and won?t settle for anything less than £720. I genuinely feel we are innocent and did leave the property clean. He is complaining that there was mold in the flat but because it was in an old house the property was damp when we moved in and so I don?t think we can be blamed for it.
Could anyone advise me on what to do next? I?m having a baby in February and don?t need this stress. How long does will it take to go to court and if I lost am I liable for his costs? Also do I have an legal ground to defend myself against his extortionate costs? I want to fight this as think it?s wrong what he?s doing. Does anyone have any tips?
