A mains water pipe had broke in my ground floor flat Filling every room with nearly 3" of water. My carpets and my wood flooring and most of my furniture has now got water damage. I cant remove the carpets untill the insurer has come out which is nearly a week after the incident so now we are living in a flat that is seriously damp with 3 young children. The council know what has happened as they sent a inspector out to assess the damage to the property and the property needs all new wood work ie doors door frames skirting boards and kitchen units and new flooring in both the kitchen and the bathroom. Now we are all starting to get very chesty and and becoming quite unwell by it and they have not stepped in and put us in temporary accomadation we are all living in one room that has not been affected as much. But the smell of soggy carpets and wood is so over powering. I am taking us all to the doctors and going to get my gp to see weather our all of a sudden illness is due to the condition of the flat. Do you think i stand a chance trying to claim some compensation from the council for allowing us to live in a water damaged property with young children.
The pipe is coming up from the mains into my kitchen then it goes into the upstairs flat and it was on the bend of the pipe that has broke. My Insurance is for contents only so does that qualify for them to put me in accommodation. I thought as its a council property they would put me into temporary accommodation whilst the damage was rectified not let us live in it. And they have said that the work may not be completed til next month??
