Can I get compensation from ex-employer who forces staff to work in illegal working-conditions?

Carpet Floors - the soft and comfortable side of living.

Hi there,

I'm a student from London and recently accepted a live-in seasonal job in a Scottish hotel for the summer. I got the job by writing to the proprietor via email. It cost £130 travel and an additional £300 in preparation to get to the remote hotel in the middle of the highlands.

The conditions were awful when I arrived. I was promised roughly 40 hours? work and two days off each week, and instead was presented with a timetable and manager, who demanded I work an 80 hour week with no days off! The hours were worked on a split shift basis, and we got roughly a 6/7 hour gap between the daily shifts, meaning at no time did we ever get 8 hours sleep a night.

In addition to this, my accommodation was a small room in an old dilapidated trailer. The room was dirty, there was no hot water, but this is the best bit- the toilet was broken! And I don't just mean a little broken; excrement had spewed out of the loo and had sodden the carpet. My bed was roughly 1 meter away from the loo and excrement.

I immediately complained to the proprietor, who dismissed the situation. He said there was simply no other place for me to sleep, and that I should clean the SH*T up! I went away for an hour, checked the laws online, and decided to resign if they didn't sort these conditions out. I told the proprietor that I?m unhappy and I?m leaving if he didn?t sort out my hours and living conditions. Without hesitation, he said ?ok bye?, despite this meaning that the rest of the restaurant staff would be severely understaffed. He told me to speak to the manager, so I did. I explained the situation, which she said couldn?t be rectified. I also told her that both the living conditions and the hours were illegal, which she denied. There was no compromise, she said the hours won?t change and there?s nowhere else for you to sleep.

I resigned. Now I?m back home, unemployed for the summer. It looks like I?m getting some work at a local bar, but I?m furious that I was inconvenienced, lied to and taken for an idiot. Is there anything I can do? Can I claim compensation? It would be nice if I could get something out of them, but if I can?t then I?m happy to report them so other people aren?t treated in the same way. Any advice? Who can I talk to about this?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
EDIT: I worked there for 4 days and then chose to resign due to the illegal conditions.

There must be something I can do about it. Sleeping next to faeces can cause serious illness.
