we rented out a hostel for two nights. we're all 17, and there was no contract signed. we spoke to the owner over the phone, who told us the password to the lock for the house, and said to just leave the money behind in the visitors book.
a week after we left, she rang to say there were damages and extra cleaning that we needed to cover. me, a friend and her mum, drove up to the hostel, cleaned what needed cleaning so we wouldn't have to pay any extra cleaning costs, and spoke through the damages. we agreed what would be paid for and what wouldn't. (e.g the owner said a cupboard in the garden which had been damaged he would just fix himself). but said that we'd cover the costs of anything that we did damage.
now, we've just recieved an email saying the following:
he wants £120 for the damaged cupboard.
£90 to pay his cleaner.
£60 to pay the laundry costs.
£20 for a mop that was broken.
£60 for shampooing the carpet.
- we shampooed the carpet when we drove up.
- he is claiming the £90 for the cleaner, and £60 for the laundry are 'extra' costs that wouldn't normally have to be paid: we didn't use ANY extra laundry, other than that which was put out for us.
also, the cleaner he said had to be paid for two days work, because the first day, she refused to clean it. the second day was while we were there, and she was out the back smoking a cigarette.
he is saying if we dont come up with the money by friday, he is getting the police involved.
does he have a leg to stand on legally? do we? he has NO details, other than my email address, first name and mobile number.
and let us stay there, despite the fact that we were all under 18, and there were no medical supplies in the building.
sorry its a bit long winded! please help.
we're completley willing to cover any costs of things we did damage, but i think he's taking it too far.
