Hi
I have recently been given a large piece of carpet (about 4m by 6m) which was removed from a house. I would like to re-use this carpet in a few places but my trouble is that it has a large amount of underlay attached to the bottom of it. Most of the underlay has gone solid due to its age and cracks up when the carpet is rolled or folded and some of it has fallen off but there is still a lot more that I need to remove.
I don't think the underlay is glued to the carpet but I can't be sure, it looks like it is just the age of it which has made the underlay fuse onto the carpet. I don't know what it is made of but it is a black substance and when it does crack up and fall off in small pieces it makes a horrible black dust that sticks to everything.
What is the best way to remove it from the carpet? Is there any specific tools or cleaning products that may help? So far I have just been folding and bending the carpet to make it crack off but due to the size of it this is quite difficult.
Any advice is appreciated.
