There is water leakage from the asbestos soil pipe which collects water from the bath and the bathroom sink. The pipe leads down from above the bathroom ceiling down through the bathroom and down into my hallway where the hallway carpet was collecting water from the pipe (at the moment the water in the bath is scooped out and brought downstairs to prevent any further leakage onto the hallway carpet). The plumber who came to my house told me that the water was leaking from asbestos soil pipe and that it would have to be removed and replaced. He has given me a price of £620 to remove the asbestos pipe and to replace it with a UPVC pipe. However he has told me he can?t take it to the tip as only households can take the asbestos there. I do not have transport and family and friends are worried about moving it, although the plumber will wrap the asbestos up in the appropriate packaging, so I am not sure how it can be removed afterwards.
I contacted another plumber who said he wouldn?t remove it himself but he would find out prices from specialist asbestos removers who will put sheeting down upstairs and take the safety procedures before removing it. I am worried that the Asbestos Removal Company will be a rip off but then I am also worried that if I use the first plumber, I mentioned, to do the job, that he may not use sufficient safety procedures and put sheeting down and that asbestos fibres will be embedded in my carpet. Also I was wondering whether it would be safe to hoover the carpet with my carpet cleaner or whether a specialist hoover should be provided by the person who removes the asbestos pipe and also should I use a dust mask while the job is being carried out. I have got a few worries this job, naturally with the pipe being asbestos and worry about cancer.
